Mission to Mercy
Road to Mercy
- "Yeah, but where's their mother?"
- — Sam, after Jace pointed out the Corpsers were just babies
Sam was in the back of a truck with Dom on the road, and they soon found that he highway had been turned into an imulsion field by stalks. Reavers spotted them and began attacking, so Sam set up an ammo crate to keep Dom supplied while he used a Vulcan Cannon to clear the skies along with Marcus in the other truck. They dodged debris and Reavers as the drivers went full speed to escape the area, and Sam kept worrying they were going to crash into something. They soon entered a ruined city, and Dizzy took the lead, using the fuel truck he was driving to smash through Locust barricades. Sam continued keeping Dom supplied with ammo as they fought off baby Corpsers, and she worried about where their mom was. As they turned around a corner, the mother appeared and jumped down onto the highway, collapsing it. The Gears confronted the full-grown Corpser under the highway, but managed to escape and continued driving. They then reached Concord Air Base, which had been occupied by the Locust. They smashed through several Locust positions, but became stuck in a hole filled with sand. After holding off a large group of Drones, they managed to get the vehicles unstuck and continued onward. They spotted a Brumak at the end of the runway, but were able to defeat it by getting barbed wire caught between the two truck and decapitating it with a jump.
A Ghost Town
- "Hey, everybody stop! Look - the pipelines rigged."
- — Sam, after noticing a bomb on the pipeline
They arrived at Mercy a few hours later, parking at a fuel station at the edge of town. They were confused as to where everyone was, and Dizzy noted that it had been crowded with Stranded a few months ago. They suspected the Locust were involved, and they discovered that the pumps were shut down. Sam went with Marcus, Dom, and Anya to check out the town while Jace and Dizzy guarded the trucks. Sam called out to see if anyone was nearby, stating that they just needed some fuel. There was no answer, and the progressed deeper into town. Sam asked DOm when he had last been to the city, and he told her fifteen years ago when he and Maria had buried her parents. They continued following the fuel line through the streets, and Sam noticed that it had charges rigged at several points along it. Marcus was worried about being ambushed, but they found no signs of anybody still living there or a battle. Sam wondered why they would have rigged the pipeline, but nobody could think of a reason. After disabling a third charge, they were fired upon by a Stranded. They took cover, and he yelled out to them to stop touching the charges and that he had to stop some illness from spreading outside of the city. He began to run away from them and they tried to convince him to come back, with Sam noting they needed to know where else he had placed charges. As they chased after him, Sam hoped that whatever disease he was talking about did not affect them. They followed the pipeline and the Stranded into the sewers, where they found the man dead. Sam wondered what had killed him, and Marcus ordered everyone to keep an eye out for danger.
Discovering the Formers
- "She's Lambent! It's spread to humans!"
- — Sam, upon Delta discovering a Former in the sewers
They split up to cover more ground, with Sam going with Dom along the top portion of the sewer while Marcus and Anya explored the bottom. They encountered Lambnet huamns. Sam and the others were shocked, and dozens of Formers began charging to attack them. After clearing out the sewer, they found an exit and returned to the surface, contacting Dizzy and Jace to warn of them about the situation. Sam became terrified that they were all going to end up turning Lambent, but Marcus reassured her they would be fine and would leave the city just as soon as they found the fuel.
