Collapse of the COG
Scouting the Mainland
- "Sera's still alive. So we can still save it."
- — Marcus to Trescu, after spotting a stag grazing in Vonner Bay
Three months after Prescotts departure, preparations were being made to leave Vectes. Marcus was selected to go on a reconnaissance mission to the mainland aboard KR-239 with Hoffman, Trescu, Parry, and Sharle. They were disappointed to find Port Farrall had been overrun with stalks, ending any hope of relocating the COG as a whole. They decided to inspect Gerrenhalt and Vonner Bay as possible relocation points, but had to fly past Jacinto City to reach them. They were all shocked to see that nothing remained of Jacinto anywhere, with the entire area having become a giant bay. Marcus remarked that the Lambent Brumak had really worked, and Trescu asked him if he had been the one to personally detonate it. Marcus told him he had used the Hammer to do so, but Sorotki cut in and reminded them that he, Mitchell, Baird, and Dom had helped as well, and said he didn't want Marcus going down alone in the history books as the person who had destroyed Jacinto. Marcus remarked that maybe that was his inheritance, and they proceeded to Vonner Bay. Sorotki landed on one of the roads near the city, and Marcus stood guard over Parry and the others as they inspected the city to determine if it would be viable for part of the population to be moved to. When a flock of gulls suddenly flew away from a nearby store, Marcus headed over to check it out with Hoffman. They spotted a stag in full antler, and stood gazing at it for a while, joined by Trescu. It eventually moved back into the forest near the city, and as Marcus turned to rejoin the others, he remarked to Trescu that Sera was still alive, and that they could still save it, and Treescu said that perhaps they could. After another hour of inspecting the city, Parry and Shale concluded that it could be used to house several thousand people, and they returned to the Raven to go and inspect Gerrenhalt.[1]
Third Battle of New Jacinto
- "I said stop, Dom! Come on, next road- can't you hear it?"
- — Marcus to Dom, when Dom wouldn't stop shooting and reloading at dead Lambent
A week later, tremors were detected along the north perimeter of Vectes Naval Base. Marcus grabbed a Packhorse flatbed variant, and joined up with Dom at the main gate of the base. Marcus asked him if he wanted to drive or shoot, and Dom said he wanted to shoot, and climbed up on the chain gun on the back of the Packhorse. They watched as the Ravens flew overhead, looking for the spot where the Lambent would emerge, and Sorotki eventually contacted all the defender and informed them that there were three Stalks emerging in Block H. Marcus took off and headed for the emergence point, and they watched as six more Stalks emerged. When they reached the area, a mass of hundreds of civilians were attempting to escape from the Lambent, and Marcus and Dom exited the Packhorse and waded into the crowd, pushing through to reach the Lambent. When they reached them and their firing lanes became clear, Marcus and Dom hosed the mass of Lambent creatures, which included Polyps and Lambent Cats. Marcus directed the few remaining civilians to run and get clear, and KR Eight-Zero arrived to support them. Barber contacted him and said that there were hundreds of Lambent creatures, and they were scattering everywhere. Marcus told him that they had the Lambent in this area under control, and to move on and help elsewhere. They finished off the Lambent in their area, but Marcus noticed that Dom was still reloading and firing at the remains of the Lambent. He yelled at him to stop, and was forced to grab his arm to get him to listen. Marcus then led him to the next road over, where they found Anya, Jace, and Rossi fighting the Lambent alongside some civilians and an Armadillo. Marcus and Dom joined them, and they were soon reinforced by every other Gear on the base. They eventually wiped out all the Lambent, and Marcus began clearing a space for a Raven to land in order to pick up wounded. He saw Dom, Anya, and the others begin to assist the wounded, and saw Dom stop and stare at a little boy who was shaking silently, huddled up against a dead woman. Marcus picked up the kid and told Dom he had him, and to move on and help the others.[2]
Recovering the War Memorial
A little more than a week later, Marcus volunteered to take Cpl.Frederic Benten, a retired Gear from Pelruan, back to the town in order to retrive a plaque from the Pendulum Wars memorial there. He and Dom helped Benten into a Packhorse, and they turned down an offer from Sorotki to fly them there, since Marcus didn't want to rush Benten. Marcus drove to Pelruan, avoiding stalks and holes in the road where polyps had exploded. He parked near the town hall, and he and Dom looked around to make sure it was safe. Dom hated having to evacuate another home, and Marcus agreed, but hoped that the third time would be the charm. He asked Benten if he wanted to be driven the rest of the way to the memorial, but Benten told him he could still walk, and asked him to lead on. They escored him to the memorial, and Marcus and Dom stood at attention as Benten gazed at the memorial. He asked for a few moments alone with it, and Marcus told him to take however long he needed. They returned to the Packhorse to get a screwdrive to help remove the plaques, and Marcus wished he had a flag to fold the plaques in.[3]
