Sylvia Carla Santiago was the daughter of Dominic Santiago and Maria Flores, sister to Benedicto Santiago. The youngest of the two Santiago siblings, Sylvia was born just before the landing at Aspho Point and Dom's eighteenth birthday.[1] She was born earlier than expected, and Dom missed Maria giving birth. Her middle name was named after Carlos, for the female version of Carlos is Carla. She continued to live with her parents and brother in Jacinto for a couple of years until they moved into a house in Emprya.

Sylvia and Benedicto were sent to their grandparents house so that Maria and Dom could have some time alone together - unfortunately, that day also happened to be Emergence Day. The two children, and their grandparents, were killed by Locust. Maria continued to blame herself for their deaths for years, and eventually began to hallucinate that they were still alive, searching for them when she could.

Dom keeps track of how old his kids would be if they were alive in which he indicates that Sylvia would be seventeen during the time of the Evacuation of North Gate.[2] However, even though Dom has been in grief for a long time, Maria was suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Her depression lead her to go weeks without speaking or eating. Eventfully her childrens death lead her to leave Jacinto and too live with the Stranded.
