Kryll
From Gears of War

- "There's Kryll shit everywhere!"
- — Baird
Kryll are highly aggressive flying pack creatures native to the Outer Hollow of Sera, first appearing on the planet's surface following the initial Locust invasion on Emergence Day. Being subterranean creatures, they are extremely photosensitive, due to the normally low amount of light in their caves, and avoid light if at all possible, which almost blinds them to the point of physical pain. Humans use this to their advantage at night to keep from being devoured, and have even adapted ultraviolet searchlights to be used as weapons against the foul beasts.
During the day, Kryll rest in Locust tunnels and feed at night, so consumed by blood lust that they will attack anything not near a light source, whether it be Human or Locust. Kryll will not hesitate to devour any Locust Drone, Stranded, Gear, or basically any living thing foolish enough to leave the light. Much like bats or the insectoid locust, the Kryll hunt in great swarms, combining their efforts to bring down prey much as a piranha might, with hundreds of the small creatures uniting to strip a hapless victim to the bone in seconds.
Marcus did not seem initially aware of their existence during the first Gears of War, suggesting the Kryll began to appear sometime after his incarceration but before being rescued and pardoned. Nor is there any evidence that Kryll were a problem for the humans of Sera before the Locust Horde attacked. This combined with RAAM's unique Kryll wrangling ability among other things raises all sorts of questions about the true nature of the Locust Horde and the origin of the Kryll themselves.
After the detonation of the Lightmass Bomb, the Kryll breeding grounds were all destroyed and the species is now endangered or possibly extinct as they are not featured in Gears of War 2. It is likely they were destroyed, as in the War Journal Baird discusses the Riftworm being woken up by the Lightmass Bomb, he says that the Kryll were all killed.
Trivia
- It is unknown whether any Kryll will appear in any future games, as all sources state 99% of the Kryll are dead, suggesting there is still could be an amount of Kryll capable of breeding.
- The Kryll were actually planned to be in Gears of War 2.[1] They would be in a chapter in some sort of spawning pits where they feed, sleep, reproduce, and live. A cave, nest-like area where the pits are filled with glowing maggots that they feed on. But for unknown reasons, the chapter and any actual Kryll appearances were left out.
