The Hydra is flying Locust creature that functions similar to the Reaver. In Gears of War 2, you can see the Locust General, Skorge, riding on one of these. In one scene in the Hollow, Skorge uses his Hydra to lure out the Rift Worm, causing Ilima city, which is one of three cities to be pulled underground. Marcus then realizes what the Locust have been using all along to sink the cities into the ground. Later in the game Marcus and Delta Squad are pursued by the hydra as they try to escape the inner hollow. You get to battle the Hydra in Act 5 Chapter 1: Escape of Gears of War 2.
[edit] Trivia
- The Hydra was first seen being ridden by what appears to be a Theron Guard in the ending cut-scene of Gears of War.
- It was nicknamed 'Rhino Reaver' before its real name was shown in Gears of War 2.
- During the fight with Skorge, there are reports that the hydra keeps fighting even though it has no head.
- The Hydra in Greek mythology is a serpentine creature with multiple heads, which would grow two more heads if one was cut off.
- The Hydra is also considerably faster than a standard Reaver, as Skorge chases Delta Squad effortlessly during the first part of Aftermath.
