- "What the hell does that to people?"
- —Jace Stratton after seeing a dead Locust with its hearts ripped out.
Heart Leeches were native creatures that live in the Hollows. They are not part of the Locust Horde, and their existence was known to the human race during the Pendulum Wars. Heart Leeches kill by embedding themselves into their victims chest and slowly tear open the rib-cage. The heart is then devoured inside the chest cavity as the leech then exits the deceased victim which is why they are called heart leeches.[1]
History
Mission to Montevado
During the Mission to Montevado, Jace Stratton and Dominic Santiago walked into a Heart Leech nest. They killed several of them, and blew up an Imulsion tank that burned several more, but were in danger of being overrun. However, they were saved by Marcus Fenix and Michael Barrick, and all the Heart Leeches were killed.[1]
Alex's Warning
According to Jace, Alex Brand once put a dead Heart Leech on a sleeping squadmate who called her foxy.[2]
