Flame Grenadier
From Gears of War
A Flame Grenadier is a Locust Grenadier armed exclusively with the Scorcher Flamethrower, and is featured in Gears of War 2. Flame Grenadiers are also equipped with a backpack fuel tank that significantly increases the fuel capacity of the Scorcher.
[edit] Gameplay
Flame Grenadiers first appear in Act 3: Gathering Storm of Gears of War 2. Flame Grenadiers share some similarities with regular Grenadier, such as having the same amount of hit points (despite the appearance of additional armor and a helmet) and characteristically rushing at enemies while firing their weapons. Flame Grenadiers are also vulnerable to headshots, despite the helmet. However, Flame Grenadiers are much harder to fight in close-quarters than Grenadiers because the Scorcher can damage enemies behind cover.
Flame Grenadiers are particularly vulnerable because of their backpack fuel tank, which will ignite and then explode if damaged, especially in cover when their backs are turned to you. The explosion will not only kill the Flame Grenadier but also damage friendly units or players in the immediate area. If the backpack fuel is ignited, the Flame Grenadier will charge toward the nearest enemy or player. Even after a Flame Grenadier has died, the backpack fuel tank on the corpse can still be damaged and will explode. However, the backpack fuel tank is least visible from the front of the Flame Grenadier, and is harder to hit in close-quarter combat.
Flame Grenadiers are sometimes confused with Flame Boomers. Flame Grenadiers have a number of distinguishing characteristics from the Flame Boomer. The Flame Grenadier is smaller, moves faster, and carries the Scorcher above the hip, in contrast to the Flame Boomer. The Flame Boomer also has a tendency to shout "Burn!" when charging against a Gear
[edit] Multiplayer
Like other Grenadier and Grenadier Elite, the Flame Grenadier can be selected as a playable character model in multiplayer. However, the multiplayer Flame Grenadier model does not have the backpack fuel tanks and players using the Flame Grenadier model will not spawn with a Scorcher Flamethrower.
[edit] Trivia
- In the Campaign, when a Flame Grenadier is used as a Meatshield the backpack fuel tank and helmet is automatically discarded.
- While chainsawing a Flame Grenadier from behind, the chainsaw will tear straight trough the backpack fuel tank without igniting it.
- A good idea in horde is to kill them without setting off their fuel tanks. The corpse will still have the tanks attached, and can be used as an IED for later, if you can still see the tanks, as they occasionally die face up.
- There is no visible connection between the backpack fuel tank and the Scorcher.
