"The Locust have begun to carve mines and tunnels into the rocks of the Seran Deadlands, seeking out any existence that resembles the underground passages of the Hollow they once called home. But this harsh environment is as relentless and unforgiving as any enemy they’ve ever had to face. The Locust Trenches are small and tight, with clean lines of sight across virtually the entire battlefield. The central hill leads to a fortified bunker with a strategically important vantage point. Once taken, it is rarely surrendered, unless opposing forces can manage to sneak up under the cover of a passing sandstorm that leaves everyone blind for a short while."
—Epic description of the map Trenches

Trenches is a multiplayer map in Gears of War 3.[1] It is one out of the four maps that were featured in the Gears of War 3 beta.[2]

Map Characteristics[]

The map itself is clearly based on the Locust stronghold in the Deadlands, and is quite possibly still under construction considering the locust crane located on the south side of the map.

At certain times during a match, regardless of any mode used with this map, a horn will sound. This signifies the start of a sandstorm, which will blind players. AI players can still see and shoot just as well as they can without the storm. The sandstorm does not deal any damage, and players may find it irritating who wish to use long range weaponry, but helps those who use close combat weapons such as the shotgun or using the chainsaw bayonet.

Tactics[]

It should be noted that the most efficient tactic on this map is to keep moving. Trenches features the Mortar, the One-shot and the Digger launcher, all three of which are a threat to those who progress slowly and cautiously around the map.

Changes from Beta to Retail[]

The Hammer of Dawn is notoriously missing from the map. This is most likely due to the fact the Hammer of Dawn was added very late into the beta period. The spawn points were relocated in the retail version. The Cave was only accessible via a tunnel right in front of a sandbag right in front of the Nest in the Beta. In the retail version, the Cave is also accessible via two tunnels near the spawn points. In the center of the map, towards the Mortar, the Digger Launcher/Scorcher Flamethrower spawn there, which was replaced with the Frag Grenade/Incendiary Grenade in the retail, with the Digger Launcher being relocated to the Cave. Also a Mulcher was added in the place where the One-Shot appears, on the Nest. As stated above, the Hammer of Dawn was once available, and two Boomshields were also available on the map as well in the Beta near the spawn points.
