[edit] Description

The COG Tag is a form of identification worn as a neck chain by Gears of the Coalition of Ordered Governments. Personal identity information is engraved on each COG Tag, so they are used by Gears to identify fallen Gears in battlefield situations. It has been said that the family of a deceased Gear will pay substantial money to have the COG Tag of a fallen loved one recovered.

The COG Tag's name comes from real-world dog tags, which serve the same purpose.

[edit] COG Tags in Gears of War

There are 30 COG Tags (33 in the PC version) scattered throughout the campaign. Although many of them are located off the beaten path, every one of them has a corresponding Crimson Omen in the vicinity. Keep your eyes peeled for the spray painted Crimson Omen insignia, as that is your surefire clue that there is a Tag nearby. Some of the Tags are on the floor directly near the Omen, whereas others are less obvious.

If you have obtained 10 COG tags in Gears of War, you will unlock Minh Young Kim as a playable character in the Gears of War 2 Multiplayer.

[edit] COG Tags in Gears of War 2

In Gears of War 2, COG Tags are one of the many kinds of collectibles that can be found throughout the game. All of the COG Tags are accompanied by a letter written by the Gear to his loved ones.

[edit] Trivia

  • In Gears of War, at the very beginning of the Fish in a Barrel chapter, Delta Squad investigates a pile of corpses that are believed to be part of the missing Alpha Squad. As he studies the bodies, Marcus Fenix actually says "Dog tags are gone" when the subtitles read "COG tags are gone".
